Update Complementary Without Breaking Your World
Updating Complementary is simple when you never overwrite your only working ZIP. Use this for Unbound, Reimagined, and optional Euphoria Patches.
1. Capture the current setup
Note the pack name, Minecraft version, Iris or OptiFine build, and any non-default settings. A screenshot of Shader Pack Settings saves time later.
2. Download beside the old pack
Grab the new build from Unbound or Reimagined. Place it in shaderpacks next to the old ZIP. Do not delete the old file yet. Catalog: versions and changelog.
3. Test in a copy world
Open a test world or a copy of your survival save. Enable the new pack on Medium. Check daytime lighting, rain, caves, and the Nether.
4. Reapply custom profiles
Major updates can reset assumptions. Reapply Potato or custom profiles and confirm FPS in the same spots you measured before. Use profiles and FPS tips if frames slip.
5. Remove the old ZIP last
After one clean session, archive or delete the previous pack. If something regresses, select the older ZIP in the shaders menu.
Patches
Update the base Complementary pack first. Add or update Euphoria Patches only after the base build looks correct. If the new version black screens, follow black screen fixes.
Modpack pins
When a modpack locks an older Complementary file, treat the pack author’s version as source of truth. Use our versions catalog when you maintain your own instance.
Game version jumps
Updating Complementary without matching Iris or OptiFine to the new Minecraft version can fail before the pack loads. Revisit Iris setup or OptiFine setup when you bump the game.
