Install Complementary with OptiFine

OptiFine can still run Complementary Shaders on Minecraft Java Edition. Iris on Fabric or Quilt is usually smoother for modern versions and Sodium stacks.

Use OptiFine when your pack or habit already depends on it. Keep Iris and OptiFine in separate profiles.

OptiFine install steps

Install OptiFine for your exact Minecraft version, launch that profile once, then add a Complementary ZIP from Unbound or Reimagined into shaderpacks. Do not also install Iris in the same profile.

  1. Install the OptiFine build that matches your Minecraft version.
  2. Launch the OptiFine profile once so folders generate.
  3. Download Complementary Unbound or Reimagined as a ZIP.
  4. Move the ZIP into .minecraft/shaderpacks.
  5. Open Options > Video Settings > Shaders and select the pack.
  6. Set a quality profile and test FPS in your main world.

When OptiFine is the wrong choice

Choose Iris instead if you want Sodium, modern Fabric mods, or fewer loader fights on current Minecraft releases. See the Iris guide.

If shaders compile forever, the world turns pink or black, or the pack never appears, drop to a clean OptiFine profile with only Complementary installed, then follow the black screen guide.

OptiFine caveats

Some modern mods expect Fabric Iris. Modpacks that ship Sodium usually should not add OptiFine.

If shaders compile forever or crash, confirm the Complementary version supports your game release on the versions page. Lower the profile or switch to Potato before you blame the ZIP.

Common questions

Not inherently. Iris is usually easier on modern Fabric setups. OptiFine is fine when your instance already depends on it.
Do not put both in one instance. Pick one loader stack.
Usually no. Prefer Iris unless a modpack requires OptiFine.
