Black Screen After Enabling Complementary? Fix It

A black or pink world after enabling Complementary is usually fixable. Change one thing at a time.

1. Confirm Java Edition

Bedrock cannot run Unbound or Reimagined. Confirm Java Edition and that Iris or OptiFine actually loaded. If you landed here from a Bedrock search, see Complementary on Bedrock.

2. Turn the pack off and relaunch

If the menu still works, open Shaders and select OFF, then relaunch. If the game only works with shaders disabled, the pack, preset, or a conflict is the cause, not a corrupted survival world.

3. Clean the loader stack

Remove OptiFine from Iris instances. Temporarily disable other visual mods. Test with Iris, Sodium, and one Complementary ZIP only. Rebuild with the Iris guide if needed. Resource packs that rewrite skies can clash; test without them once.

4. Replace the ZIP

Redownload from Unbound or Reimagined and keep the file zipped. Partial downloads fail to compile. Prefer the latest stable build unless a modpack pins an older one on the versions page.

5. Drop to Potato

Enable the pack again on Potato. If Potato works and Ultra fails, you have a performance or effect problem, not a total install failure. Step up with profiles.

6. Update GPU drivers

Outdated drivers cause black or pink worlds on some GPUs. Update, reboot, and test a new world before your main save.

7. Remove Euphoria and add-ons

If you recently added Euphoria Patches, disable them and retest the base Complementary pack alone.

Pink versus black

Pink often means a compile failure or a bad download. Solid black can be a too-heavy preset or a driver issue. Note whether the main menu still renders; that tells you if the loader runs at all.

Use a test world

Create a creative world with shaders on. If that works, your survival save is fine. Focus on pack settings, not world repair. Log the last mod or resource pack you added before the screen broke.

Still stuck

Use the troubleshooting page and confirm the stack with first-hour setup. Avoid deleting .minecraft as a first reaction.
