Voxy with Complementary: Test Carefully
Some Java players pair Voxy-style distant scenery tools with Complementary under Iris. The combo can look great and also tank FPS if both run at High defaults.
Test Complementary alone in a throwaway instance first. If frames drop after adding Voxy, lower Complementary effects or disable the LOD mods before you blame Unbound or Reimagined.
Recommended test plan
- Create a fresh Fabric or Quilt profile with Iris and Sodium only.
- Install Complementary Unbound or Reimagined, apply Medium or Potato, and confirm stable FPS.
- Add the Voxy-related mods that match your exact Minecraft version.
- Raise distance features gradually. Watch stutter when turning and when new chunks generate.
- If hitching appears, lower Complementary shadows and volumetric clouds before you blame the pack alone.
When the world fails to render
- Disable Voxy-related mods and relaunch with Iris + Complementary only.
- If Complementary alone fails, treat it as a normal shader issue on the troubleshooting page.
- If Complementary alone works, re-add distant mods one jar at a time until the break returns.
- Keep a known-good pair of versions written down for your modpack pin list.
Practical advice
Distant rendering plus High or Ultra Complementary settings can overwhelm mid-range GPUs. Prefer Medium and moderate distances for everyday survival.
LOD tools and shader packs both cost VRAM and CPU time for chunk work. Budget them like two expensive mods, not free cosmetics.
For general FPS cuts that are not Voxy-specific, use the FPS boost guide and Potato settings.
