Fabric and Sodium for Complementary

Fabric plus Sodium is the performance base many players use before enabling Complementary with Iris. Sodium improves chunk rendering. Iris adds the shaders menu.

Build that stack first, then add Complementary last so you can tell whether a problem is performance, loader, or the shader pack.

Recommended stack order

  1. Install Fabric for your Minecraft version.
  2. Add Sodium and its required libraries.
  3. Add Iris compatible with the same game version.
  4. Launch once and confirm FPS feels sane in vanilla.
  5. Install Complementary Unbound or Reimagined into shaderpacks.
  6. Enable the pack and start on Medium or Potato.

Performance habits that matter

Cap FPS near your display refresh rate to reduce heat spikes. Lower shadow resolution before you cut render distance to zero.

Use the FPS boost guide after the stack works. Do not chase Ultra presets on integrated graphics.

Why install order matters

If you add Complementary before Sodium and Iris are stable, every hitch looks like a “shader bug.” Launch vanilla Fabric + Sodium first, then Iris, then the ZIP from the download page.

After Complementary is enabled, tune with settings rather than removing Sodium. Sodium is usually what keeps the pack playable.

How to verify the stack

  1. Confirm Fabric profile launches.
  2. Confirm Sodium is listed and FPS improved in a test world.
  3. Confirm Iris adds a Shaders screen.
  4. Add Unbound or Reimagined and enable it.
  5. If something fails, use troubleshooting with only those mods enabled.

Common questions

Often yes when Iris and Sodium builds support Quilt. Match versions carefully.
Sodium alone does not load Complementary Shaders. You still need Iris or OptiFine.
Finish with the Iris Complementary guide, then pick Unbound or Reimagined.
